Brake caliper cooler developed by Performance Technology.
The concept
Meticulous observation of the dynamics of the braking system has resulted in our “Brake Plate Radiator”, particularly with the thermal energy conversion during braking and with the heat radiation spreading to nearby components. It has been observed that, for various reasons, braking systems have lost over the past few years some balance characteristics that they had already achieved in the past, reasons such as: speed performance improvements; spending evaluation trend of manufacturers; the arrival of synthetic materials. Here lies our ambition to invent a dual function device that could on the one hand reduce the thermal radiation coming from the pads towards the clamp and oil and on the other hand generate cooling for the pad to avoid sustained critical temperatures. Therefore, we have created special hybrid pads, consisting of two parts: one made of special thermal steel, the other made of a light alloy with a high heat exchange rate.
The project was carried out after a year of testing and comparison right before the release of the final version.
The project
The heatsinks were developed using two different metal elements to optimize the thermal insulation of the pad by the caliper and its cooling. The base of our heat sink consists of a special thermal steel with high thermal conductivity. The material is first laser cut and then CNC machined in the PF workshops, the slots have two purposes, first to reduce the contact surface, second to reduce the hot air formed inside the brake piston cavity of the hot chamber effect, and the spread of heat in the piston and oil. The main body of the steel sink is connected to a light metal heat sink made of a special aluminum with high thermal conductivity, which has the task of supporting the heat dissipation process.
The tests showed a reduction in the brake pad temperature to a maximum of 20 degrees, a significant improvement in braking behavior, incredible stability when braking, an optimal roll-back value of the brake pads and thus hot freewheeling. In addition, the brake pads have shown a 25% longer service life due to less high-temperature use.
The project has been in development for over a year and during that time we have used different bikes and always got the same result.
The development
The development of the project took a year, PF started with the selection of the materials and their production process. Different configurations and different material finishes were tried, we used data collection tools and dedicated thermal imaging cameras to view heat propagation by examining different points of the caliper and pad. We've put in over 500 hours of track testing and 20,000km of road testing. In total, the product was tested on six different motorcycles and under different operating conditions.
This is how PF came up with these configurations that guarantee the exact compromise between efficiency, weight, cost and ease of installation.
